The Rise of Ashley Sofilkanich: A Bucknell Star Gearing Up for the Spotlight

When Ashley Sofilkanich steps onto the court, there’s a certain electricity in the air. The 6-foot forward for Bucknell University has been rewriting the record books and putting on performances that feel like they’re ripped straight out of a basketball fairy tale. Averaging an impressive 20.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and shooting 49.3% from the field, Sofilkanich isn’t just having a great season—she’s crafting a legacy.

On a crisp Wednesday evening at Sojka Pavilion, Sofilkanich cemented her place in Bucknell history, tying a 22-year-old single-game scoring record with 44 points. Her performance was nothing short of heroic, as she led the Bison to a gritty 71-67 overtime victory against Colgate. Making 16 of 27 field goals, converting 12 of 16 free throws, and grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with five assists, it was her 12th career double-double and a night Bucknell fans won’t soon forget.

But for Sofilkanich, this isn’t just about records or accolades. It’s about growth. As Bucknell prepares for a pivotal matchup against Boston University, Ashley reflects on the journey that has brought her to this moment and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

Patience and Poise in the Paint

One of the biggest areas of focus for Sofilkanich between her freshman and sophomore seasons has been her decision-making in the post. “Definitely patience when catching the ball in the paint,” she says. “Reading the defense and making the right decision has been a major focus. Also, getting lower in the post on offense and when on defense to prevent fouls.”

This dedication to fundamentals has paid dividends, as her efficiency and versatility around the rim have made her one of the most consistent scoring threats in the Patriot League. Whether she’s maneuvering around double teams or drawing contact for trips to the line, Sofilkanich’s growth is evident every time she takes the floor.

Seeing the Game Differently

The transition from freshman to sophomore year often brings a deeper understanding of the game, and Sofilkanich is no exception. “I’ve been able to read defenses to make the correct passes to teammates,” she explains. “Seeing where help is coming from and identifying how opposing teams are defending screens has allowed me to make the right play more consistently.”

This improved vision has made her a more complete player, capable of creating opportunities for her teammates and keeping defenses guessing. Her ability to balance scoring and playmaking has been a cornerstone of Bucknell’s success this season.

Lessons in Adversity

No season is without its challenges, and Sofilkanich has learned to embrace them. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay calm and use the frustration I have with bad plays, misses, or fouls to stay under control and keep playing my game,” she shares. “The same applies when playing tough teams. Keeping my cool creates solid play on the court for myself.”

Her composure has been a defining trait, particularly in high-pressure moments like her record-tying performance against Colgate. It’s this mental toughness that sets her apart and makes her a leader on and off the court.

Setting Goals and Leading the Way

For Sofilkanich, leadership isn’t just about her own play—it’s about inspiring those around her. “Some goals I set for myself were to be a good leader for my position group and to play solid defense throughout the year,” she says.

Her dedication to defense and team-first mentality have been instrumental in Bucknell’s success, and her ability to lead by example has made her a role model for her teammates.

Guidance for the Next Generation

Off the court, Sofilkanich is paying it forward, offering advice and encouragement to her younger sister, Taylor, who is also an aspiring basketball star. “I always tell my sister to never give up during games and that good defense will generate offense,” she says. “I think she has so much potential to be a phenomenal college basketball player, and I can’t wait to see where she decides to play in college.”

Choosing Rise Sports Management

When it came time to select representation, Sofilkanich chose Rise Sports Management, a decision rooted in trust and shared values. “I chose Rise Sports Management because I love what they are about,” she explains. “Alec Small loves the game of basketball and works hard every day to secure opportunities for his athletes. That kind of determination and dedication is why I chose to be a part of Rise.”

As the season progresses, Ashley Sofilkanich’s story continues to unfold. From her record-breaking performances to her leadership on and off the court, she embodies what it means to be a student-athlete. With a crucial game against Boston University on the horizon, one thing is clear: Sofilkanich is just getting started. Bucknell fans, stay tuned—the best is yet to come.
