How college coaches actually watch your film?
What happens in the first 30 seconds — and why most highlight tapes never make it that far.
A college coach opens your film with one question: can she help us win? Not is she athletic. Not can she score. Everything below is what they are checking while your highlights play.
The first 30 seconds: 3 things they look for
- Position fit before production. Coaches slot you into a role inside the first three clips. If your film does not say what you are, they guess — and guesses go in the no pile.
- What you do when you do not have it. Screening, spacing, cutting. You are off the ball for most of every possession. That is most of the film.
- Speed of decision, not speed of foot. How fast you read the play. A quick right read beats a fast wrong one every single time.
3 things that get your film closed early
- Music, transitions, slow motion. Coaches want raw. Effects read like you are hiding something.
- No context. If the level of competition is not obvious, the clip does not count.
- Six minutes long. You have about 30 seconds of attention. Lead with your best three clips.

Would a coach know my position within 10 seconds?Is the level of competition obvious without me explaining it?Is my single best clip inside the first 15 seconds?
Answer no to any one of those and your film is costing you looks. Write that down.
