BYU just landed a winner.

Campbell Thulin, the No. 1 player in Illinois in the Class of 2027 and a Top 100 national prospect in the BTN Scouting rankings, has committed to BYU, choosing the Cougars and second-year head coach Lee Cummard over a recruitment that reached into the Big Ten.

The 5-foot-10 Downers Grove North guard is the kind of prospect who does not show up cleanly in a highlight reel, which is exactly why she is this good. She rebounds like a forward, passes like a lead guard, and defends like the best perimeter player on the floor in the same game, every game.

That is not a skill set. It is a job description, and it is the hardest one in basketball to fill.

## The Production

Thulin has started on varsity since her freshman year, which at a program of Downers Grove North's level is its own evaluation. The Trojans won a program-record 30 games with her in the starting lineup as a freshman. By her junior season they were 22-2, riding an eight-game winning streak, and sitting atop one of the toughest conferences in Illinois.

**She fills the box score because she fills the gaps.** Rebounding at her volume from a guard spot is a motor trait nobody gets those by standing in the right place. She generates deflections and steals by anticipating rather than reaching, and she never stops moving on the offensive end, which is how a player her size ends up creating that many extra possessions.

**The scoring comes in bunches.** Thulin gets her shot off quickly and can string buckets together in a hurry, which is the version of scoring that swings a game in a three-minute stretch rather than across four quarters. She has never needed the ball to be useful, and she has never been shy when the ball found her.

## Why BYU

Cummard's first season in Provo was a strong one, and Thulin is the kind of commitment that follows a season like that. The Cougars are no longer selling a rebuild they are selling a Big 12 program with momentum and a staff that proved it could coach in year one.

**The fit is clean.** BYU needs perimeter players who can defend multiple positions, rebound out of the backcourt, and make the extra pass. Thulin does all three, and she does them without needing the offense routed through her. In a conference with the Big 12's physicality, a 5-foot-10 guard who already rebounds out of the backcourt is going to hold up.

**It is also a win on the trail.** Illinois is contested territory, and the Big Ten recruits it hardest. Pulling the state's top-ranked 2027 out of the Chicago suburbs and across two time zones says something about how far BYU's reach now extends and about how well Cummard's staff recruits when the relationship is real.

## Final Thoughts

Campbell Thulin is not a projection. She is a four-year varsity starter at one of the best programs in Illinois who has produced in every column since she was a freshman, and whose teams have won at an extraordinary rate the entire time.

The tools are high-major: 5-foot-10 with real positional size, a motor that shows up on the glass and in the passing lanes, and the processing to run an offense without dominating it. The temperament is the separator. Players who measure themselves by wins instead of points are the players who get on the floor early and stay there.

No. 1 in Illinois. Top 100 nationally. A four-year starter who has never known anything but winning, headed to a program on the rise.
